This is only supposed to happen with cats...

As Steven and I were coming home ten minutes ago, I saw a small dog running in our rather busy street. So I went to investigate, and found a small mop-like dog running amok. He has a collar but no tags, is super friendly but horribly matted and dirty, and was unknown to anyone I talked to on that block. So now he's in my living room, getting to know the bear trap. Tomorrow I'll take him to the vet and see if he's chipped, I guess.

ETA: Does anyone know about tiny mop-dog breeds? He's short, shaggy, tan-colored, with a curly plumey tail. Looks kind of like an ewok...

Now with picture!

*crosses fingers that the dog has been microchipped, and can be reunited with its owners*

Awwwww. He might be a peekapoo.

I found an ewok-dog a few weeks ago too that I'm pretty sure was a shih tzu. However, your dog could be a lhasa apso or any number of mixtures.

Good for you for picking it up. I hope it has a home!

Mix, I think, maybe part Peke based on the coloring and the plumey tail. Good luck!

Unless the angle of the picture is causing optical illusions, he's not a Shih Tzus (http://www.akc.org/breeds/shih_tzu/index.cfm), as they have very squashed little faces. Lhasa Apso (http://www.akc.org/breeds/lhasa_apso/index.cfm), maybe? Or, you know, good old fashioned American mongrel--is his coat soft or harsh?

When he's not matted with filth, he's very soft. His face isn't squashy--he looks like a lhasa to me. Right now he has an unfortunate tutu of matted fur, but hopefully I can get him clipped and scrubbed tomorrow.

Oh, poor pup dog.

Here's some Lhasas (http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/lhasaapso.htm) without the show coat for purposes of comparison. Although if he's particularly soft, he's probably not a Lhasa--at least not 100%. But given the current fad for crossing Poodles with everything under the sun ...

His nose looks a little long for a Lhasa, though that might be the angle and face-colouring. Tibetans have longer noses, but I think he's a bit small. In UK dogs I'd be thinking maybe a sheltie/lhasa cross -- the angle of the ears is a bit odd, though they can tend to get major knots behind/under that push them outwards. My guess is that he'll need a severe haircut. In general it takes more than a couple of days to develop that kind of bad hair. (In the meantime I'm wondering why it is that dog recognition from above is hard since I look at dogs from above quite a bit...)

My first thought was lhasa apso, and it looks like I'm not the only one.

He does look like a little ewok. ^_^

He could be a Havanese mix.
