So, this amazing vicissitude* of literature as performed by Orson Scott Card (link provided for context--I don't encourage actually reading it unless you like the taste of shit and increased blood pressure) was just brought to my attention, and while I won't comment on the work in question, this prompted me to reaffirm a manifesto of mine.

Every time bigots like OSC open their mouths--or set fingers to keyboard--in public, the healthiest nonviolent response I can muster is to write something really fucking gay. So congratulations, bigots: a few more fictional queers have just been born because of you.

Another reasonable response is to take a few moments to (belatedly) celebrate Freddie Mercury's birthday.

And my favorite tribute:

* I mean that more in the White Wolf sense than the dictionary's.

I am always in favour of celebrating Freddie Mercury. OSC, not so much. I gave up reading him in the 80s.

I love this. Thank you.

Aaaand that would be the reason why I never hand-sold OSC books and never faced them out at the bookstore. ;-)

The best Freddie Mercury tribute I have ever seen and will probably ever see was an entire Chilean telenovela from 1997, written specifically so that the music of Queen could be used as the soundtrack. I will not even try to summarise the plot. Suffice it that it involved an elderly lady and her niece, inheritance squabbles over their large mansion, a very nattily-dressed gangster, his estranged and equally style-conscious moll, who only wore black and white, their colleague another gangster known as The Crocodile, an evil stepmother and her working-hard-to-be-evil daughter, a sheik, a book of spells and a hero who was a ghost.

*laughing* Great post! Great response, actually.

Just remember: according to OSC, Hamlet's father makes EVERYONE GAY.
