This was the dining room before we moved in. This is the dining room now. (But with a lot more clutter and cats.)

This was the kitchen. This is the kitchen at the moment.

Eventually, the kitchen floor will match the dining room. The next step will be getting rid of the green kitchen walls. I can't replace the counters, but I can paint over the crappy fake-wood cabinets. The walls will be white, but what can I paint the cabinets that won't clash with the crazy green marble counters? I want something light, to counter the oppressive counters, but I dread the scrubbing involved with white cabinets. Cream? Light yellow? An inoffensive beige? (Is there an inoffensive beige?) Brilliant suggestions, anyone?

And, because the internet is fueled by cats, Rose and Dorothy.

[livejournal.com profile] timprov says that they had nearly exactly those counters at his dad's old church, and they did all right with a surprising range of colors of wood and paint. If the walls are white, I wouldn't go with cream cabinets, but a light yellow or even a light blue might do, if you could find a blue that did all right with whatever fleck is in the green marblish stuff.

I'd probably go with yellow, but then again the main part of my house is a brilliant lime green so I might not be the best source of advice. ;)

That's an awesomely cute cat picture, by the way!

What about a shade of burgundy? It would sit well with the green marble and leave you free to paint the walls white or a shade of cream or even a soft gray.

Wow. That was a lot of work, but the results so far are awesome. As for painting the cabinets, I would paint the walls first then see how that changes the colors of everything else. Then I would consider using a tint of a minor color in the counters...but I'm not particularly adventurous when it comes to colors. (Although I also like jaredrackler's suggestion above, too.)

I think a nice, not too light but not too dark gray would be your best bet. It is neutral, but will make a nice transition between the dark counters and the white walls.
