Hot damn, The Thing passes the test! A black guy survives*! This places it with such company as Ghosts of Mars, Deep Blue Sea, Death Race, and Event Horizon. Oh, and Predator II. Movies like Leviathan and Doomsday are in the hall of shame.

Can anyone think of any other horror/SF movies in which the black guy survives?

*Up until credits, at least, and I'll take what I can get.

If "up until the creedits" is the bar, the remake of Dawn of the Dead passes, as well.

I think "Virtuosity" might quality (I haven't seen it, just read summaries, so I am not 100% sure he survives).

But I cheated and did it backwards: I googled denzel washington science fiction and went from there.

You have all the ones I can think of, I think. Alien is another fail, of course.

House on Haunted Hill, the remake. And he gets the girl. BOO YAH.

Does Independence Day count in this variety?

Hrm. Good question. Will Smith vehicles might not count, even if he did snuff it in I Am Legend.

Why wouldn't they count?

One of the reasons I like Independence Day so much is that Earth is saved by a practicing Jew and a black man. That sums up so much that's wonderful about the American melting pot for me, and how far we've come in opening success stories to more than Northern European White Men.

True. Okay, they count. I think the difference is that I don't become automatically suspicious when the main character is black. It's when the black guy is a secondary character who's equally or more competent than the white main character that my hackles rise. God forbid someone but the MC and his love interest make it through the end. :P

Well, Keith David is pretty goddamn indestructible--not even Rowdy Roddy Piper can take that dude out in a fair fight. Further proof: Pitch Black. The Puppet Masters (I think he survived that one). The animated Spawn series. Coraline. Crash. OK, so the last one was just horrible, not horror, but still--I love the shit out of Keith David, and The Thing is one of my favorite roles of his.

In re: Dawn of the Dead, Ken Foree makes it out alive in the original, and I think he survived The Devil's Rejects as well.

Denzel in Fallen...oh, waiiiiit a minute. Never mind. Never mind.

Yeah, I remembered Pitch Black after I posted. Which wins extra because Vin Diesel isn't white to begin with, and Keith David's character was Muslim. God I love that movie.

Yeah, they got a surprising number of things right with that flick. I always wonder in SF movies where all the other cultures, religions, and ethnicities got to between the modern world and zee Future, but PB did good. The sequel, on the other hand...a third (fourth, if you count the animated short and I don't see why we shouldn't) is on the way, but I'm decidedly less excited without the prospect of more Keith David.

Spoilers?

Er... Evolution? Even lampshaded, I think. Orlando Jones as Dr. Block: "I've seen this movie. Black dude dies first."

But he survived... despite what the movie threw at him... There was an alternate ending where he, um, wound up pregnant...

Comedies don't count for my purposes. I was never worried that Winston Zedmore was going to die at the last minute.

Mars likes black guys: Brian de Palma's Mission to Mars.

Didn't Ving Rhames survive Armageddon? (too full of champagne to remember rightly)
