[livejournal.com profile] ulthar_kitty gets first dibs, but I might as well ask everyone. Does anyone want to invent me some ballroom dances? They have slow and fast waltzes (for which I need a different name), closed figure and free, but I need some more formal and intricate group dances--like a variant on pavanes, maybe. Any ballroom dancers out there who want a spot in my acknowledgments page?

The pavanes I know are pretty easy. I can tell you about Baroque dances, if you'd like.

I've watched a lot of baroque and renaissance dances, but mostly they're too boring for me. And my culture has no issues with physical contact between dancers. (Although I'm never sure how a waltz is more scandalous than a la volta, but hey...)

Because the waltz replaced the minuet, and the contrast was mindblowing.

Have you seen Valmont? When Firth seduces what's-her-face, by dancing, that's how minuets ought to be. Best filmed Baroque dance evar.

What exactly do you need from us ballroom dancey types? A write up of the steps in order? A diagram of what it looks like from birds' eye view? Or just the name and any links regarding it that we can find?
I have danced a few Renaissance Italian court dances that were formal but very intricate, and could likely find the specifics of them for you.

I'm not quite sure what you're looking for, but I'm a fan of dancing fusion. Tango Vals is like what would happen if the Viennese waltz and Argentine tango had a baby. It's fast like a Viennese waltz, but still retains the purposeful movements of the Argentine tango and the closed-embrace.

Here's a tango vals: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XJDowJI0-7s

The cool thing about the waltz is that it's usually danced in the closed position, but the degree of that "closed" position can vary. :) If you want it to be a bit more intimate... you totally can.

Good luck! I'm excited to see some ballroom dancing in TBP!

Yes, I think that's almost exactly what I want. Now I just need to come up with some names for it that make sense in the book.

I'm excited to see some ballroom dancing in TBP!

There won't be any more than there was in TDC, but hopefully I'll work in a little more description.

I'm not sure what names would make sense in the book, but another term for vals is 'el valsecito,' or 'little waltz.'

And even a little description makes the dancer side of me go squee. :D

The valsetto, of course, is the most artificial of court dances, an expression of hypocrisy in movement...
