29. Norse Code - Greg van Eekhout

I was firmly against this book due to my hatred of pun titles, but [livejournal.com profile] matociquala talked it up, so I caved. And it is in fact smart, funny, grim, and adorable. These are not Marvel's Aesir. Not entirely as crunchy as I would like, but it washed the nasty taste of Giants in the Frost out of my mouth at long last. And seriously, best wolves ever.

30. The Lightning Thief - Rick Riordan

I sell so many of these at work I thought I'd check it out. It's okay, but I am nowhere as charmed as I was by Harry Potter. Cute ideas, but the characters and the worldbuilding don't grab me. And while I like Percy's mom, I'm getting sick of the trope of placing children in abusive homes to "protect" them.

31. The Shadow Pavilion - Liz Williams

Not my favorite of the series, especially after Precious Dragon made me cry, but still lovely.

32. A Free Man of Color - Barbara Hambly (reread)

I loff these books so. LOFF.

I feel like I'm forgetting something, but that may be because I'm in the middle of four other books right now and they all start to blur.

#30 That is exactly the reason I bought a copy, but I haven't actually managed to read it yet.

Yah, I got it from the library and read a bit and said, "NO, I am SO SICK of this," and returned it to the library unread for that very reason.

(Hambly's Benjamin January books):

Oh dear ghods yes. Loff, loff, loff. To the point that I've been known to try to find the money to buy them in hardcover when they come out - not too many authors I do that for anymore, 'cause hey, fixed income, yadda yadda, and if I wait for paperbacks I can buy more books than if I buy hardcover or tpb. But some books? Gotta have, NOW.

Yup. Though I don't think any of the later ones were quite as good as the first. My only other complaint is that I find it a bit hard to believe in one character being a hypertalented doctor AND musician as well as unusually strong and generally well-educated. But I think she may have had to do that to keep him from being too beaten-down for a modern reader to identify with, and I love how those things sometimes work against him. I *don't* love but do enormously repect how unafraid Hambly is of showing the absolute worst the times had to offer (and including endnotes prove their historically accurate - it was either the second book or the third that I found absolutely searing, nightmare-inducing, all because of something she took from the historical record.

And mostly I love the deep-stewed sheer flavor of the New Orleans of a very particular time when cultures were colliding.

I'm reading The Lightning Thief right now. Am inclined to agree. It's certainly good fun, but not feeling the magic quite yet.
