Or, When Last Minute Halloween Ideas Strike

On Saturday night I found out about Austin's Krewe du Coeur Maudit, and their Evil Mermaid Navy. Evil. Mermaid. Navy. My squamous black heart grew two sizes. On Sunday night I heard back from the mermaid lieutenant and was invited to join the fun. I now have three and a half days to finish an evil mermaid costume.

So far I have my black brocade corset, several yards of black crushed velvet, netting, shells, fake seaweed, about half the makeup I need, and an idea for a tentacle skirt. Now I need a wig (my hair is too short to do anything fun with), the rest of the makeup, an underskirt (because I don't have the legs to be a burlesque octopus, sadly, and it'd be cold anyway), and to assemble the tentacles.

My concern now is not having too bad a clash between the crushed velvet tentacles and the real shells and worn brown netting. (Black and brown don't go to town, as a rule, but I think we can make an exception here.) Maybe if I cover everything in glitter...

Anybody have any experience with squamous and batrachian costuming?

Use the netting as actual netting, maybe? Either tangled around your waist, as a train, or clenched in the tentacles?

(Or go Black Mermaid Widow and use it as a veil... *G*)

Hey, the veil is a good idea. It'll help detract from the obvious cheapness of any wig I can afford to buy. :P

Also, unless the netting is synthetic, you can dunk it in black RIT dye (if you want to ditch the brown.)

Also, despite this being a dude, the blue and the green holler "mermaid" to me...

Lordy Lou.

I'm trying to make a swamp monster outfit myself, but all I've done so far is dye a set of long johns a greenish-brownish color. Was hoping to put like "seaweed" and suchlike all over... maybe sculpt a mask, that sort of thing. The idea is that he's a swamp monster from Margaritaville, so he's wearing a Hawaiian shirt and shorts...

their Evil Mermaid Navy. Evil. Mermaid. Navy.

that is made of awesome. XD

I'm finding my brainstorming for costumes sadly inhibited by knowing I want a costume I can wear to work Friday morning. it can be a modified version of the main costume, but still my brain idles.
