I decided never to describe clothing that doesn't have some plot significance after reading American Psycho. Bret Easton Ellis sucked the marrow out of fashion-as-an-aid-in-characterization for me completely. Am I over-reacting? I read Am.Psycho in '91 — since then every character I've ever written has worn gray gym sweats.
I almost wrote a scene that took place in a popular (now closed) alt/goth club here in Boston, but describing the clothing put me off. I sent my characters to a pub instead. They didn't like it.
