stillsostrange: (Blood)
Last night I stayed up till 5 AM drinking whiskey and playing Rock Band. It is possible I'm too old for this. Damn you, senescence!

Today I'll eventually get out of bed, eat some leftover curried goat, and type up the scene I wrote at my friend's house last night, in between musical misadventures. After months of suffering, misery, and hate, I've found my love for Kingdoms again. This came at the cost of a third of the originally outlined plot, but hey, love conquers all, right? Everything except deadlines.

I also recently watched The Banquet (aka The Night Banquet, or Legend of the Black Scorpion). I bought it on a whim, motivated by Ziyi Zhang, a pretty cover, and the blurb calling it wire fu Hamlet. I remember thinking Wow, this will be more depressing than Curse of the Golden Flower.

It isn't that depressing, actually, probably because of my familiarity with Hamlet. What it is is awesome. I went in expecting gorgeous costumes, fight scenes, and a familiar story altered in perhaps amusing ways. Then I realized that Ziyi Zhang was playing Gertrude, and my brain started to crack, and kept cracking.

I will cut this, since the story varies just enough from Hamlet to have spoilers. )

I am completely in love with this movie, not to mention Ziyi Zhang. It's my favorite version of Hamlet since Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead.

And looking at IMDB's trivia section, I am told that both Li Gong and Maggie Cheung were also considered for the part of Wan. I now want three versions of this movie, one with each of them.
