As I lay memeing
Jul. 29th, 2010 09:08 pmI have something that wants to be a plague. I'm drowning it with broth and juice and warm lime water in hopes it will not become such.
9. How do you get ideas for your characters? Describe the process of creating them.
There is no one process. An image, a name, a role to fill, a song, a person at the train station, a character that I love, or one that pissed me off--any of those are the speck that accretes the pearl. (Okay, maybe now I'm overusing it, but it's true!) After I have that, then I start layering in backstory and fashion sense and motivations and loves and hates until they can pass for a real person for a scene or two. Occasionally it's the opposite; I'll start with an image of a whole person, and then peel them skin by skin until I get to their heart, and I won't be able to write them well until I do.
