The meme goes on and on my friends

What, how many total? Only in finished stories? Only POV characters? If it's only POV characters, then usually several per book. TDC has three (all women), but had four in draft, and another attempted one that didn't last long. TBP has three (two female, one male). So far KoD has four (an even split), but it may end up in thriller omni yet. Dreams has six (even split), Prayers three (two F, one M), Pinion eight (five F, three M), and Mist & Chill has four mains (three M, one F) and will likely have others in flashbacks. All of them have other important characters who don't get POV.
I prefer multiple POVs all around--singles tend to feel claustrophobic, and if I'm going to spend 100+k in only one person's head, reading or writing, that person had better be pretty damn interesting.
As the numbers above indicate, I'm pretty egalitarian about gender, but more female characters tend to show up when I have open casting calls. I'd like to think I've grown as a writer since high school and early college, when most of my male characters were for pretty and not for plot, and stood around with their shirts off a lot.
