Ahoy the f-list!

Can any of you less inclined to landlubbing recommend a style of ship? I need a smuggler's ship, something quick and versatile that could cross open water or hug a coast, and possibly take another ship in occasional piratical activity. Preferably one in use before 1700, but I'm willing to handwave there. I'm staring at wiki articles till my eyes cross over here, yet remain dangerously low on clue.

I knew giving the smuggler pov would be a bad idea. :P
