Bad Movie Theatre, a double feature
Jul. 8th, 2007 01:20 pmI grabbed Zombie Nation because the cover copy reads like a zombie sexploitation flick. Wronged women coming back from the dead to fight The Man! Sign me up! And it may actually be that, but I'll never know, because the movie was too bad to watch. I think I lasted ten minutes. So this movie has earned a place alongside House of the Dead and Beyond the Wall of Sleep as a film so bad I cannot watch it. And I sat through Forest of the Damned!
I guess this means I might have to write some zombie sexploitation that doesn't suck, unless anyone else would like to. Anyone? Bueller?
Next up was Creep, grabbed solely on the power of Franka Potente, who survives this movie in one of the ugliest dresses I've seen in a long time. I think they purposely found a dress that would look better after being dragged through the sewers. But in spite of the dress, this movie is rather a gem. Well-shot, well-acted, pretty and creepy and generally not very over the top. And Sean Harris as the not-a-monster was a joy to watch--kinetic acting nearly on par with Doug Jones, and I think he makes all his own weird noises. I'm casting him as a ghoul somewhere.
In the end I don't love this movie for two reasons. First, the main character has a tragic competence shortage. Not the stereotypical screaming-horror-chick uselessness, but a very believable shrinking from unpleasantness. But believable or not, it's annoying as all hell, and makes me want to kick her. Second--and purely a matter of personal preference--it's not supernatural horror. I appreciate stories that deal with human evil and how monsters are made, but that's not what I want when I'm looking for B horror movies. But it's still a surprisingly good movie, and if you like horror without vampires and werewolves, check it out.
Today I have to face the horror that is housecleaning, before tackling the greater horror that is my book.
