And now, a rant
Feb. 12th, 2007 02:34 pmI'm seeing a lot of conversation floating around LJ about urban fantasy and marginalized characters and the De Lint problem (not the one about lesbian orgasms, though), and this is all very interesting and fun, and I have lots of things I'd like to say about artists and magical accountants, and romanticizing trauma, but this rant came together first.
I've heard people complaining about De Lint's use of abused characters, and people saying they're sick of reading about abused characters.
To this I can only say: If you don't like it, do something about it.
Join PROTECT, perhaps. Or volunteer at a shelter, or become a foster parent. Lobby for stronger laws against child abuse, help close incest loopholes that encourage predators to grow their own victims. Speak out against pedophile collaborators who claim children are complicit in their abuse. Vote collaborators out of office.
If child abuse bothers you, help fight it.
Because if families can't protect their children, and if the law won't, it's not going to go away. You can put that book down and go read something more cheerful, but that doesn't help the children being raped, beaten, and neglected. And maybe one of those children will find that book some day, a book that says This happens, but it is not okay. There are people who care about you, and people who will fight for you.
And that book may help someone, or it may not, but at least the author did something. You can read whatever you want, but unless you're doing something too, don't bitch about the people trying to fight however they can.
