I figured out the murder I've been trying to plot for TDC. It was the Shadout Mapes, in the conservatory, with the dagger.

You can take the pirate out of linguistics...

But you can never take the linguistics out of the pirate's book.

I will have invented three rudimentary languages by the time I finish TDC, I suspect. Or fleshed out two existing ones and made a third. So far I have Unpersian and Noticelandic, and will probably start creating Unvietnamese one of these days. Whee. Thank goodness I don't need the Ungreek in this book.

The annoying thing is that even if I'll only use a few words of each for flavour, my brain is not satisfied until I've worked out the fundamental grammar and a mid-sized lexicon, and can ask and answer simple touristy questions.

Ridiculous monkey brain.

But the idea of my characters walking through fantasyland enacting a Berlitz tape is pretty entertaining.

I often jest about blowing stuff up to interrupt awkward staring scenes, but this was the first time I actually tried it. It works very well indeed.

I've never had a book so influenced by current events. It's very strange.
