Blarg! I typed this silly thing and then LJ ate it. Bah. Anyway...

He's a disheveled, oversexed ghoul on the run from his own kind. She's a tempestuous, high-kicking Tindalosi hound with someone else's memories. They fight Cthulhu!

The scary part? I'm serious.

After agonizing all day over Prayers, [livejournal.com profile] katallen solved my problem in two seconds. (And that sentence is missing a vital component, as I doubt Kat agonized about my story very much. I botched my clause roll, apparently.) Now instead of not enough plot, I seem to have too much.

This all started as a simple love triangle between two ghouls and a paleontologist. I added Peter as a foil for Adrian (and for more sex), but then stalled on his motivations and reason for being in the story at all.

With Kat's help, I realized that not only is Peter hiding from the other ghouls, to whom he is an apostate (he likes fresh meat), but he also pissed off a sorcerer not long ago. The sorcerer sent a Tindalosi hound after him. (Which proves the sorcerer is none too bright and meddles with things best left alone, but more fun for me.)

Luckily for Peter, some Tindalosi hounds enjoy existing in three dimensional space. The cracks of spacetime from whence they come lack things like iced caramel mocha frappuccinos with extra whipped cream, pool halls, and cute middy tops. So without a strict timeframe, the hound will take her sweet time tracking Peter down and enjoy her new time-shared body along the way.

At this point I appear to have two books--Prayers to Broken Stone and Hounds and Jackals. They really don't want to be one book. Prayers wants flowy, dreamy, purple omni prose, and H & J wants gritty, hard-boiled tight third. I thought about separating them entirely, but that leaves a Peter-shaped hole in Prayers that I don't like. So Prayers takes place in the few months Peter manages to hide from the hound (whose name I think is Jessamine), and H & J takes place after she catches up to him.

Whee! Fear my brain!

Now let's see if I can make any of this work on paper.

This--this--is why writers need friends. (Well, aside from a whole bunch of other reasons that mostly have to do with not ending up beady-eyed crabbed borderline autistic people with poor hygience, but you know what I mean.)

Yay you!

And yay Jessamine the Hound of Tindalos!

Hooray for working out plot details! Jessamine is a great name too.

I am ignorant of things Lovecraftian; what is a Hound of Tindalos? My googling has returned dozens of cthulu rpg links (and a cafepress "Hound of Tindalos" dog T-shirt).

I fear you deeply. Also, I want to eat your brain.
