After the film my partner commented "[Ren] whined even more when he took his helmet off."
And so I realized: Sith helmets are designed to stop whining! Palpatine didn't encase Anakin in armor because of the burns and dismemberment--he did it to contain the whining. Perhaps this is an ancient Sith technology. Since their primary recruiting technique seems to be corrupting adolescents through strong negative emotions, they probably need them.
