Nothing like a plane ride to catch up on reading.

#6. The Secret History of Moscow - Ekaterina Sedia

A fabulous book--literally, too! You can't go wrong with Koschei the Deathless and Zemun the Celestial Cow in your adventuring party. I thought parts were ungrounded and a little rushed, but overall quite awesome.

#7. The Spymasters's Lady - Joanna Bourne

The voice in this is gorgeous, especially Annique's POV. I mean really delightful to read. The first twist was awesome, but the untwist didn't do so much for me, and parts following that failed to suspend my disbelief. And the seduction scene annoyed the hell out of me. But I knew going in that romance genre conventions leave me cold--what this did prove was that romances can be very well-written with respectable amounts of roller derby.

#8. Poison Sleep - T.A. Pratt

Hrm. River blew spit bubbles all over me, and then I bought this book... Baby mind-control: Threat or menace?

Lots of fun. I liked this even more that Blood Engines, and didn't notice the repetition that bugged me in BE. I officially have high hopes for this series.

And on a shamelessly self-aggrandizing note, Not one of Us #39 was reviewed at The Fix, and nice things were said about "Ghostlight". I'm not sure any of my stories "exist in an uneasy twilight between genre and literary fiction", but I'll take "beautifully written" any day.

I'm afraid the untwist had the effect of making me fall out of love with the second half of the book. I'd somehow been able to suspend my disbelief for the first half, but alas, Annique became a moron.

Yeah. There's nothing sadder than plot-induced moronity.
