Is there a geologist in the house?

Help! I'm trying to blow up a volcano, and running into some lack-of-knowledge snags.
My volcano is modeled on Mount Nyiragongo. It has the same lava lake and unusually fluid magma. What I need, in addition to lava flows, is a nasty plinian eruption--not quite Vesuvian in scale, but enough to fuck up a nearby town and give me a nice apocalyptic rain of ash. Am I correct in guessing that a volcano like Nyiragongo would not do that? Am I also correct in guessing that a flank eruption could?
Cookies and a spot in the acknowledgments page await you if you can help!
