Today is the first day of an exciting new home-improvement project. (Because I haven't finished tiling the kitchen, or taken down the painters tape in the bedroom, so clearly I need something new.) The combination of dogs and drought has turned out backyard into a dust bowl, and neither condition is going to change any time soon. So I'm going to look into xeriscaping. Further updates will follow after a trip to the hippie nursery.

ETA: I'm moving slowly into the xeri part of the scaping. I admired yuccas and agaves and ice plant, but came home with a primrose jasmine. I'm promised that the jasmine is a) drought resistant, b) nearly impossible for me to kill (but they don't know me), and c) will sprawl to huge size, thereby creating a large chunk of yard that will neither need to be mown nor watered much nor erode and blow away. The yuccas and ice plants will get another corner. Next I need to price pebbles to bury the small dune sea that's emerging.
