A Christmas miracle

Finally, the chapter is done.
And to spice up these boring word meters, I give you the evolution of a sentence:
Original: Gulls cried in the distance, their voices carrying over the water.
Next:The voices of gulls carried over the water. No. The distant cries of gulls carried over the water. No. The distant cries of gulls drifted skipped echoed shattered danced a jig over the water. No.
Finally: The distant cries of gulls scattered over the water.
Seriously, that took me fifteen minutes and an assembly team. And then there's the trouble of Liz being a philologist, so I can't be lazy with word choice. And every time I think of something smart for a character to say I have to triple check it because I hear the distant cries of "Your erudition is a sham, Mary Sue!".
Where is the horse and the rider, and what have they done with my glamour?
