I braved the backup today. I lost nine thousand words of Dreams. Luckily, that isn't really much, and it's the only thing I lost writing-wise. (Some music is gone, but again fortunately not too much. God knows what other random crap is missing that I won't notice for months.) On the other hand--that's nine thousand fucking hard-won words that I now have to figure out all over again. And no, it will not necessarily be better the second time I write it. That rarely happens to me.
Remember children, back up those files. The god of backups is a cruel and wrathful god.
On a happier note, a book.

Dude! This is the second ubiquitous 1st person UF that I've really liked! (The first was Marjorie Liu's Iron Hunt.) I don't loff it, but I'm fond of Jayne and the supporting cast (especially Midian, go figure), I liked the magic system, and for the most part everything is clever* and pleasant. My only real complaint is that there weren't enough of things: the villain didn't get enough personality or page time, the worldbuilding could have been more in depth, etc., and really half of that is a WYODB problem. (And since I have plans for a gangster mage novel, I will indeed W my ODB.)
*The business with Jayne's tattoo is kind of screamingly obvious, to the point of making the characters look dumb for not thinking of it. Unless I'm wrong, of course. There is always that possibility.
I have a very groggy puppy here, sans ovarian equipment. Pauvre puppy.
