I've been putting off reading this forever now. From what I'd heard, I was expecting some sort of grotesquerie of pus and severed limbs.
In fact, this book is instead made of awesome.
A few things prevent it from reaching true weapons-grade awesome: the beginning is a bit slow, the characters sometimes distant, and the prose occasionally bogged down with "felts" and other scaffolding.
On the other hand, dude, the awesome! Camelopards, Old Gods, bacchanals, creepy sewers, monsters, bargains, sacrifice, redemption, resurrection... Awesome! The writing is always good, with moments of gobsmacking gorgeous. If I can pull off something half this neat, I shall be happy indeed.
