I can't tell you how many times I've had that conversation with profs. But I never cave!

The Historian, update
Aug. 24th, 2005 01:49 pmStill reading, still enjoying (bad library examples aside). I appreciate the very subdued sense of menace Kostova pulls off, unnerving her characters without going OTT.
However, I am not quite the target audience for the book, despite my love of academia and vampires. So far the story has followed several characters in their research into the life of Dracula, turning up historical tidbits as they go. This is all very interesting, and I like watching the characters grow more and more unsettled. But...
I score high on the vampire portion of Goth Standerized Testing. I did all this research and so much more in high school. So while the characters are recoiling aghast, I'm just drumming my fingers going come on, come on. What about Radu and Mircea? When does Hunyadi show up? Don't forget all the castles. Oh, please, that's barely gruesome compared to X or Y...
At least they haven't mentioned Peter Plogojowitz yet. :P
I enjoy a good Dracula book as much as the next girl, but I'm waiting for something shiny. Something new. I'm not sure it can be done with Unkie Vlad anymore.
I'm still trying to figure out how to make vampires in general shiny again, since I have a few of them poking me in the backbrain. My theory is that any competent writer can write a competent vampire book, but I'm not sure when the last time I read a really shiny vampire novel.
