Images I could have lived without for $200, Alex.

You know that horribly overused scene in D&D where the adventurers walk into the Seedy Tavern and meet the Mysterious Old Man... As I sat in Denny's this morning, drinking coffeesque swill, my brain tried to translate that beginning into an urban fantasy. Why, god, why?

A truck stop. Tiny and wretched and badly lit with a permanent film over the tile, where you can taste the gasoline in the burgers and almost hear the E.Coli collecting the meat into a sort of brain sentience. Sounds like Rice Krispies. An old man hangs out by a bank of dead video games noone ever plays at (a place parents send their kids to punish them with disillusionment) in a tattered long leather coat which seems strangely out of place. Anyone who looks to long at the faces that come and go will wonder if they're all wholly human, whether the road pulled the souls out of them or whether some are just empty, like balloons filled with alien breaths and sulfur, things shambling out of chaos for a quick bite.

I can see it working.
